How to make your website visible to ChatGPT, Claude and AI search

A practical answer engine optimisation checklist: structured data, entity clarity, question coverage and the mistakes that make AI assistants skip you entirely.

Why this is now a separate discipline

A growing share of buyers ask an AI assistant for a recommendation instead of scrolling a results page. If the assistant never mentions you, that traffic does not exist for your business — and unlike a poor Google ranking, you get no impression data telling you it is happening.

Answer engine optimisation is the practice of making a site legible and quotable to those systems. Here is the checklist we work through.

1. Fix entity ambiguity first

This is the most common and most damaging failure. If your brand name is shared with another company, or your own site describes you inconsistently across pages, AI systems will merge or confuse the entities. We have seen agencies confidently described by AI assistants as manufacturers of entirely unrelated products for exactly this reason.

The fix: pick one sentence describing what you do and who you serve, and use it verbatim in your Organization schema, your meta descriptions, your About page and your directory profiles. Consistency beats cleverness.

2. Ship correct structured data

Use a single canonical Organization or ProfessionalService entity with a stable @id, an absolute url, and a sameAs array pointing only at profiles you actually control. Duplicate or conflicting organisation blocks are worse than none. Add BreadcrumbList, page-type entities and FAQPage where genuine questions and answers exist.

3. Answer real questions in plain language

AI systems quote passages that directly answer a question. Content that circles a topic without stating an answer does not get cited. Write the question as a heading and answer it in the first sentence beneath. Then add the nuance.

4. Give numbers, not adjectives

"Competitive pricing" is unquotable. "A single landing page starts around CHF 750" is quotable. Specifics are what get extracted.

5. Check nothing is blocking crawlers

Look for stray noindex tags on important pages, broken internal links, and pages orphaned from your navigation. We regularly find a site's About or Pricing page silently set to noindex — which removes exactly the pages an AI system needs to describe the business.

6. Build citations off-site

AI systems weight third-party corroboration heavily. Directory profiles, review platforms, and mentions in industry publications all contribute. A site with excellent on-page AEO and zero external mentions still struggles.

7. Measure it

Track how often your brand is mentioned and cited across the major assistants for your key buying questions, not just your rankings. Zero mentions is a diagnosable problem, not bad luck.
